New Chance music. All with live drums.
Started recording about three weeks ago. Excited. Will post some details as they come up.
Go behind the scenes during the recording process of “Bus Stop People” and watch the upcoming exclusive documentary, “Bob answers the call.”
It’ll be available for viewing next week (Tuesday or Wednesday).
Guilty as charged.
Saturday, I had planned on finalizing all the tracks for what will be the first single release in over a year.
Drums? Done.
Bass? Done.
Keys? Done.
Guitars? Hmm. A little tiny fix and addition… done.
Vocals?
Vocals?
Alas, not as tight as I’d like them to be. This song is funky. It has an octave up and down part following each other, and it’s pretty important they are bang on. So, I spent the rest of the afternoon, cleaning up and tightening up the vocals.
So, the good news is I think I’m pretty much down with the RECORDING of this song.
Next up, prepping the tracks for mix, and mixing!
I just might be hitting my groove.
Woke up, got out of bed, most definitely did NOT drag a comb across my head.
After an hour of playing with Henry, I started my usual start time (10 AM), and almost immediately knew I wanted a faster tempo: View Full Article »
Lesson learned:Never, I mean NEVER do what you think is a quick Pro Tools Update just before your lunch break. Makes for a very annoying day in the studio.
Saturday began with an all in attempt to bang out this one song I was working on. I am now comfortable with the structure, happy with the lyrics, LOVE the main essence. Just had to upgrade the bass performance (ie play it well), and flesh out the drum part.
Fleshing out the drum part took about an hour and a half. I thought, hmmm I’m getting hungry, so I don’t want to start doing takes of the bass part on a soon to be empty stomach. BUT…
Now, my intent was to upload it to my Facebook Artist page, but phppppt that (don’t know why but the music player is not letting me upload).
So instead, I’m dropping it on my site.
The short and sweet of it is the song has no guitars yet (except acoustic). It’s just a board mix so the mix is borderline chaos. I think the structure is done, but the performances are still aways away from being finished.
This is what I have of the song thus far. Enjoy!

Worked almost exclusively on the newest song, Bus Stop People. Frustrating at first because I started to get this weird feeling this one would be hard to finish (Easy as pie to start, but oh that last mile…).
Primarily I had to figure out whether to write a bridge, and how to write an ending. I found two things happened:
After a full day of trying, on Sunday I took this breakdown bridge and attempted to make it the end of the song. But I still didn’t like the “bridge” lyrics and melody that I had written.
So, I just started riffing and sang “And I think I like how this is going…”
And, well, I think it worked!
Right now the song stands at a little over 4 minutes and change. It’s a small possibility I might trim some musical section fat, but I’m leaning against it because the song has such a pulsing beat, it’s kind of nice to zone out on it.
After settling on the structure (perhaps a poor choice of words but I can always change it!), I re-sang the two main vocal parts.
Listened to it in the car this morning and it’s coming along. Now, it’s time to re-do the bass and start fleshing out the drum part. That could be a lot of work. We’ll see.

Rain. Groovy.
Usually rain conjurs mellow tunes out of me. Perhaps it’s more correct to say I allow the mellow tunes to come out when it’s raining, but that’s just semantics, yo.
But NOT today. I had this idea of wanting to write something a little more uptempo, a little more groovy. And Rain be damned, that was my goal this day. View Full Article »
