I think this is one of the few times where I envisioned a video at the same time that I was composing the song. And it has kind of worked out that way: shot footage in December for what will be a companion video.

Here are the lyrics:

What I Pray For

Lying down upon the grass, I ain’t lonely or afraid
We’re surrounded everywhere by flowers on parade
Here we are, the time is right to see what we have made
Cause over there, beyond the hill, a house beneath the shady tree

i pray for, a house beneath the shady tree I pray for
a house beneath the shady tree…

Looking up, the clouds are colored yellows, reds and blues
Darling can’t you smile or are you just a bit confused?
The wind died down, but where it blows is not for us to choose
Cause over there, beyond the clouds, the watercolor skies are what

i pray for, the watercolor skies are what I pray for
i pray for, the watercolor skies…

look beyond the crowded rooms, beyond the winter kill
go by car, by graveled road to find the old windmill
lean your face into the wind to feel how time stands still
when it does, you’ll know you’re there, a quiet place for us to play

i pray for, a quiet place for us to play I pray for
i pray for, a quiet place for us to play….

So, rather than be annoyed and frustrated by my catching a cold the night before this past Saturday’s recording (and having said cold carry forward still through this day, albeit weakly), instead I’llshare the lyrics I’ve written for one of the songs that I’ve been working on, called “Telephone Ear.”

It’s in progress. There are some words I want to change, and a couple of lines that I’m flat out missing. But, hey it’s coming along. Enjoy.

Telephone Ear

look up to me, a little voice said
you’re lookin’ messed up from head to toe
do you know how the story goes? oh
i guess you already heard of it

nobody knows, ain’t gonna hide it
i’m fightin’ back tears I can’t control
i lost my heart when I lost my soul. Oh?
i guess you already heard of it

all i want to hear
are the same words that you whisper on the telephone ear
and so I wish, and blow the candles out (2x)

and I’m climbin’ up the tall tree
And I’m shouting so you’ll find me
so there’s no…..guessing game
(i guess you already heard of it)

<2nd half of this verse>Missing</2nd half of this verse>

all i want to hear
are the same words that you whisper on the telephone ear
and so I wish, and blow the candles out (2x)

From the Water to the Sand

Yesterday, I wrote this:

From the corner, in the distance
see the ocean’s final light
rain is falling, clouds are winning
pushing the sun towards the night

Now the boat is speeding faster
clothes are soaked, it’s getting cold
feel the water slap our faces
laughing ’cause we found our souls

Oh my brother, oh my friend
we should tell all what we know
what we found out, about each other
and just how far that we can go

Crashing surf along the shoreline
probably minutes, feels like days
all the lights and stars in heaven
blackened forest, set ablaze

After just one mile I traveled
from the water, to the sand
I emerge, my heart, exploding
(i’m) closer to your promised land

Oh my lover, oh my friend
we should tell all what we know
what we found out, about each other
and just how far that we can go

….From the Water to the Sand

So, this is the first “substantive” blog post on my site in a bit of time. I’d calculate, oh, at least 8 months or so.

Henry H Hutchison

Henry H Hutchison

For those out of my loop, my wife and I had a kid. A boy; Henry is his name (you guessed it: he’s 8 months old!). For the most part, he has completely invaded our life like a welcome plague. He’s nothing short of amazing in this writer’s eye, but if you know me at all, well, you probably already knew that. And this blaze of emotions, and physical exertion, and sleep deprivation, and exciting firsts;  please regard this as a hilariously euphemistic turn of phrase when I say “it’s an  interesting time in my life right now.”

Turns out, of course (and I suspect I knew it all along), that he has certainly messed with my musical “workflow”, for lack of a MUCH better word.

But don’t think I’ve stopped.

Much of my writing for the first few months quite literally was maxed out at mumbling words, lyrics, melodies into a nearby digital mini-recorder, or an iPhone memo app. It turns out that the stuff that has been coming up and out–coupled with bits and crumbs culled over the last couple years –has pushed me into a direction I’ve wanted to explore for a while, but never had the right amount of compositions to do it.

I do now.

Now, I’m not saying that I’m going to ‘start banging on a sink with a spoon, record it and call it “original.”‘ But I am saying the next few songs will be different for your ears, as well as mine. I just want to try to have a group of songs with this specific atmosphere and emotion, and see where it takes me.

And I’d like you to come along for the ride.

So, to 2010, to new music (and its direction)…. and to Henry. All of which is…to be continued.

A side note: 10 is my favorite number. It goes back to my childhood love of the soccer player, Pele, if you must know. If nothing but that funny little reason alone, I’m looking forward to the new year.
