And wouldn’t you know it….

A good night’s sleep is kind of helpful!
Woke up the next morning. Made breakfast (french toast, eggs, bacon). Went outside for a quick walk, and boom, my mind goes, “hey, I think I solved your puzzle.”
Frantically walked back upstairs and wrote out the arrangement: I changed out the 2nd verse guitar came in and how it came in (repeating the riff instead of developing it); Made the 2nd chorus half as long and, instead, went straight into a guitar solo. Tried something different with the bridge by shortening its ending. This decision made the last line of the bridge bleed over into the last chorus. It’s kind of different and I think I liked it.
Then just moved stuff around in Pro Tools.
I’ve listened to it a few times and I think I like where it’s going! I’ll probably shut down the ending 4 bars then it is now. I just don’t think it’s necessary. Apart from that, now the task is re-recording the parts. Sometimes, when I’m in creative mode, I don’t think too detailed on getting the best sounds. I just go for it.

Hope your weekend went well…

The Truth is…

To everyone else:
Over the weekend, a fan from Canada picked up the last CD and some of the newer singles. Just after ordering, he was kind enough to point out I had some misdirected links on my music store site. The heads up was very cool of him, because I suffer the arrows of a complete lack of sleep these days, so I tend to mess up here and there when upkeeping my sites.

When I wrote back thanking him, I ended up telling him what I was doing at that moment. I think perhaps it was one sentence or two I wrote that made a lot of sense to me (in a resonating way), so I figured why not: blog about it!

Truth is, I’m spending as much time I can in the studio hashing out a lot of new songs. And I’ve gotten to the point of the process that is past the initial enthusiasm of the germ, and before the song “turns the corner.”

In other words, the hard part.

The hard part can also be called the time when the real work begins. It separates the men from the boys, the women from the girls and the tuna from the can. It can be messy, tedious, time consuming, fraught with frustration, bewildering and give you this sense of one long moment with no end.

And yet, this is something I not only want to do, I must. Every song has a different birthing process, and well, some are easier than others.

There is a place I access when I’m in this writing process. I guess the only way I can explain it is if you imagine your eyes looking forward but only in the technical sense. In the actual sense, you are looking just back and a little up. I can only describe it thus: You’re looking at your brain. You know what I mean? If someone were looking at you, they wouldn’t perceive you looking at them. Maybe you’d look lost in thought, but the truth is you’re looking at some area of your brain. Maybe it’s the creative section, maybe it’s your big filing cabinet. But either way, you’re not thinking/acting/performing in the conscious, you’re really in another place.

So, that’s where I’ve been these past oh maybe week and a half. But in earnest, it started this past weekend. And the irony of it is, you don’t necessarily feel (emotionally) that you want to be there (because, for lack of a better word, it’s hard) until you’ve walked through it…when the song finally turns the corner.

And then—and only then—could you never be more grateful.

Jury Duty and more…

This weekend, with 3 days of jury duty in the can and complete (I was dismissed at the tail end of it; who knows why), I turned my attention to writing.

First thing, and perhaps most important to my writing process (this may be a secret, but it shouldn’t be) is “reading.” I don’t read books as much as I like, but when I do, I’m much more creative.

So, I went out and bought three books to carry me for a few months. The first one I’m reading right now is William Gibson’s Neuromancer. I’ve never really read too much science fiction –and certainly never any cyberpunk novels–but I’ve always liked the genre from a movie perspective. So, I’m giving it a go in the written form. I’m shocked at how many movies have completely ripped this novel off, as it was written in ’84, i believe. This guy is way ahead of his time.

Although I spent last weekend compiling all my germs, thoughts, sneezes and viruses from my mini recorder, this weekend (as well as the next few) will primarily be composed of hashing out new ideas. Literally doing a blank slate; no conscious attempts at pre-conceived notions. Just going for it, in other words.

Saturday, I wrote 3 germs; two of them lyrically as well. And Sunday, I wrote one which I’m probably happiest of the three: if it passes the germ stage, it’ll be called “These Black & Blues.” I really like the title of one of the others called “Towards the Land That Smiles.” (By the way, a germ is not a full blown cold [song]. It’s just a germ!)

Later on Sunday, I decided to do what I had long pushed off: I dismantled much of my studio desk so I could have my piano directly in front of me (rather than on the side.) It makes for much less strain on the ol’ neck as before I had my piano to the right of me, my recording desk straight in front, and my laptop (where the words reside) to the left of me. Not very ergonomic, to say the least. And who the heck knows if any of it is fricking feng shui haha.

I also racked my UA 2-610 mic pre, as it had previously been sitting on top the digi 002. Eliminated some needless cords and I think the studio is better for it. One thing that sucks is I have to buy some longer cords for a few things now that the mic pre is in a different place. But all in all, I think this is for the better. I’m LOVING having the piano right in front of me.

Red beans and ricely,
Chance
