Chance's third single since the LP "Famous Words & Alibis" explores a very personal side of Chance; one where he revisits rural Oklahoma where part of his roots lie. It feels like this raw, folk-inspired song was written in a red barn atop a haystack. "What I Pray For" really is a trip down memory lane but with a clear sense of the present. In stark contrast to his own youth, his son is growing up in the metropole of Los Angeles, bound to have an entirely different childhood. Kudos to Chance for daring to be vulnerable in making a song that is essentially rough and unpolished, although I believe you will appreciate how the song appears to be going through different phases as it progresses.
